Kids Jiu-Jitsu vs Wrestling: What Does Each Teach?

1 min read

Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling overlap, but they are not the same thing. I want kids to understand both systems for what they are before blending them together.

What wrestling emphasizes

Wrestling places enormous value on stance, takedowns, top control, pressure, escapes and scrambling. Folkstyle rewards riding and control. Freestyle changes the scoring and exposure priorities. Greco-Roman removes attacks to the legs and makes upper-body positioning, pummeling and body locks central.

Children learn how to move another person, maintain balance and keep making decisions during fast transitions.

What Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes

Jiu-Jitsu allows a child to spend more time solving problems from positions that wrestling may treat as dangerous or undesirable. Guard work, positional escapes and submissions change the logic of the exchange.

That does not make one system better. It means the child learns a different map.

Why we teach both

A wrestler who understands Jiu-Jitsu becomes more comfortable with submissions and bottom positions. A Jiu-Jitsu student who understands wrestling becomes harder to control standing and in scrambles.

The best integration happens after the child can recognize which system they are using and why.
